Cuando cuarenta inviernos por tus sienes

Tajen profundo asedio en tu belleza,

Y sea tu juventud, viva de verde,

Inútil y harapienta, cual maleza.

Entonces, cuando te pregunten dónde

Quedó el tesoro de tus recios días

Decir que en órbitas vacías se esconde

Sea vergüenza y dispendiosa hipocresía-

Mayor sería el elogio a tu belleza

Si al darle empleo, dijeras “Mi hijo

Será la suma y la vieja excusa

De mi vida”, y su belleza, tu cobijo.

Tu sangre cálida, si corre fría.

When forty winters shall besiege thy brow

And dig deep trenches in thy beauty’s field,

Thy youth’s proud livery, so gazed on now,

Will be a tattered weed, of small worth held.

Then being asked where all thy beauty lies—

Where all the treasure of thy lusty days—

To say within thine own deep-sunken eyes

Were an all-eating shame and thriftless praise.

How much more praise deserved thy beauty’s use

If thou couldst answer “This fair child of mine

Shall sum my count and make my old excuse”,

Proving his beauty by succession thine.

This were to be new made when thou art old,

And see thy blood warm when thou feel’st it cold.

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,

Feed’st thy light’s flame with self-substantial fuel,

Thou that art now the world’s fresh ornament

And only herald to the gaudy spring,

Within thine own bud buriest thy content,

And, tender churl, mak’st waste in niggarding.

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,

To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.

¿Podré igualarte a un día de verano?

Vos sos más dulce y tanto más templado:

Alcanza el viento los brotes de mayo

Y el verano cierra pronto su arrendado.

A tiempo el sol refulge muy caliente

Y sabe oscurecer su tez de oro,

Y lo bello debe a tiempo envilecerse

Por azar o un derrotero sinuoso.

Pero no va a claudicar tu estío eterno

Ni perderá lo bello que le debes

Ni la parca te ostentará en su averno

Cuando en versos sin muerte al tiempo vueles.

En tanto que alguien viva u ojos vean

Vivirá esto y vos, cuando te lean.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Su vista, recorriendo los barrotes,

Se cansa tanto que no busca más.

Le parece que hubiese mil barrotes

Y tras los mil barrotes, nada más.

El tierno andar de pasos suaves, recios,

Que da vueltas en diminutas rondas

Es como un baile firme en torno a un centro

Donde aturdida voluntad se aloja.

A veces, y sin ruido, se descorren

Sus pupilas - Penetra ahí una imagen

La tensa calma de los miembros corre,

Y en el centro del pecho se deshace.

Im Jardin des Plantes, Paris

Sein Blick ist vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe

so müd geworden, daß er nichts mehr hält.

Ihm ist, als ob es tausend Stäbe gäbe

und hinter tausend Stäben keine Welt.

Der weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte,

der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht,

ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte,

in der betäubt ein großer Wille steht.

Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille

sich lautlos auf –. Dann geht ein Bild hinein,

geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille –

und hört im Herzen auf zu sein.
